Vegan Options Are Required by Law in Portugal
In 2016, the Portugal Vegetarian Society (Associação Vegetariana Portuguesa) gathered more than 15,000 signatures requesting that public institutions and eateries serve at least one vegan option. In 2017, the law was implemented by the Portuguese parliament.
All Portuguese schools, canteens, universities, hospitals, prisons and all other public buildings are legally required to serve plant-based food. Three left-wing parties were a major cause of the law’s approval.
Lisbon is Europe’s new cool capital. It is still reasonably priced with an exploding vegan scene. We will explore Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods and enjoy day trips to Belem, Sintra and Obidos. There will also be free time for you to explore and discover your own finds to share with the group.
We have 40 hectares along the river Rio Vascão, the longest uninterrupted Portuguese river and the most preserved. The land was planted with Pine trees and was abandoned since 1992. It is a hill pointing North with slopes and riverbed on the East and West sides of it. The vision is to establish a self-sustained plant based perma-culture, build using close to 100% natural material with different ancient building methods to become a Vegan retreat.
Our retreat is based on three pillars: healthy food, surfing and Portugal. Lasting one week during September 2019 and located in beautiful Baleal, 90km north from the capital of Lisbon.
We focus on a personal approach to make you feel as part of our family. That’s why we only accept 4 people per week so we can dedicate enough time to each one of you.
Here are some tour details from our previous trips to Lisbon. These plans can be used as the inspiration for your peronalised itinerary. Every tour is customised for the particular group. We have a great network of contacts around Portugal with insights on the emerging vegan scene as well as nature and wildlife spots to discover.
This tour was led by Wendy Werneth, the Nomadic Vegan. Wendy has been to over 110 countries. She has made Lisbon, Portugal her adopted home city, so it must be something special, which she will share with you. You will join a Cooking Class and learn to make veganized Portuguese specialties. There will be a few day trips out of the city. So, if you enjoy shopping, you will have fun seeing all the products made from eco-friendly cork. Lisbon has both a vegan clothing and shoe store. Everyone in our groups the past two years loved the hotel where we stayed, so we have chosen the same place for 2020. It has two vegan breakfast places within a five minute walk.
